Scam Awareness in India – Stay Alert, Stay Safe

Financial scams are increasing every day. Awareness can prevent irreversible money loss.

💡 Money not lost to scams = Money saved.

Scammers exploit fear, urgency, trust, and greed. They impersonate banks, courier companies, government officials, and even your own friends.

If someone pressures you to act immediately, stop and verify.

📦 Fake Courier / Customs Scam

Scammers pretend to be from courier companies or customs department claiming a parcel is stuck due to address or documentation issues.

⚠ Real Example: Call Forwarding & WhatsApp Takeover Scam

  1. You get a call saying delivery boy can’t reach your address.
  2. You are asked to dial:
    *21*<fraudster-mobile-number>#
  3. This activates call forwarding on your phone.
  4. All calls and OTPs are redirected to the fraudster.
  5. They install WhatsApp using your mobile number.
  6. You are logged out of WhatsApp.
  7. Fraudster messages your contacts asking for money pretending to be you.

❌ Courier companies never ask you to dial phone codes.

🌍 International Call Scam (+44, +1, +92)

Many victims receive calls from international numbers (commonly +44 UK) which cannot be called back.

  • Call disconnects quickly
  • Follow-up via WhatsApp
  • Caller pretends to be bank, courier or investor

Indian banks, couriers, and government departments do NOT call from international numbers.

📈 Fake Investment & Trading Scams

Fraudsters lure victims with unrealistic returns using fake ads, testimonials, and impersonation.

⚠ Real Example: Fake Nirmala Sitharaman / AI Investment Scam

  1. Social media ads claim ₹21,000 becomes ₹5,00,000 using AI trading.
  2. Images/videos of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are misused.
  3. You register using name, email and mobile number.
  4. You receive a call from an international number (+44 UK).
  5. You are asked to transfer money via UPI or QR code.
  6. Money goes to compromised (mule) accounts controlled by fraudsters.
  7. Funds are quickly withdrawn via ATM or transferred further.

❌ No government official promotes private investment schemes.

💸 UPI & QR Code Payment Scams

Scammers trick users into approving UPI collect requests or scanning QR codes claiming it is for receiving money.

QR codes are only for paying, not receiving money.

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself

  • Never dial unknown phone codes like *21*
  • Never share OTP, PIN, or CVV
  • Do not trust social media investment ads
  • Verify only via official websites
  • Block and report suspicious numbers

🚨 What to Do If You Are Already Scammed

If you suspect or realize that you have been scammed, act immediately. Quick action can significantly improve the chances of recovering your money and preventing further damage.

  1. Immediately block your bank account / UPI:
Call your bank’s customer care and request to freeze your account or UPI ID. If possible, disable net banking temporarily.
  2. Report the fraud to Cyber Crime:
Visit cybercrime.gov.in and file a complaint immediately. The sooner you report, the higher the chances of recovery. Also you can call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930.
  3. Inform your bank in writing:
Send an email or submit a written complaint to your bank mentioning the transaction ID, date, amount, and fraud details. This creates an official record.
  4. If WhatsApp is compromised:
Immediately log out of WhatsApp on all devices, re-verify your number, and inform your contacts not to send money to anyone claiming to be you.
  5. Disable call forwarding:
Dial ##21# to cancel call forwarding and restart your phone.
  6. Change passwords:
Change passwords for email, banking apps, social media, and any account linked to your phone number.
  7. Do NOT send more money:
Scammers often ask for additional payments claiming “refund fees” or “unlock charges”. This is another scam.
  8. Preserve evidence:
Save call logs, WhatsApp chats, SMS, screenshots, UPI IDs, QR codes, and transaction receipts. These are critical for investigation.
  9. Warn family and contacts:
Inform close contacts so they don’t fall victim to follow-up scams using your identity.

⏱️ Time is critical. Most recoveries happen only when reported within the first few hours.
